- Studios: Sci-Fi Dine-In
Theater Restaurant
- Another theme restaurant was added to the
backlot annex area in 1991. This may be one of the most unusual restaurants
anywhere. You enter a full size soundstage that has been transformed into
an outdoor movie theater at night. Seating is in recreations of vintage 50's
convertibles. Roller skating wait-staff will serve you while you watch trailers
from classic horror and science fiction B-movies.
- Studios: The Backlot
Theater
- Further adding to the expanded backlot annex area, the
Backlot Theater, opened in 1991, provides a venue for live stage shows based
on the most recently released Disney feature animated film.
- Recreation: Discovery Island
- In 1991
Maguari storks were raised in captivity for the first time anywhere in the
world at Discovery Island.
- Resorts: Contemporary Resort: Convention Center
- The fall of 1991 saw the opening of a new 90,0000 square foot convention
center for the Contemporary. Located in a separate building, it is connected
by a second floor enclosed walkway to the original convention space in the
main hotel.
- Resorts: Vacation Club (now Old Key West)
- Walt Disney World's Vacation Club Resort is Disney's first foray
into timeshare vacations. Opened in October 1991, Disney uses a somewhat different
system than other timeshares for the allocation of vacation time. The Vacation
Club is located on Bonnet Creek Parkway, just before the Port Orleans Resort.
- Magic Kingdom: SpectroMagic
- SpectroMagic,
the high-tech replacement for the venerable Main Street Electrical Parade,
debuted in September 1991.
- Studios: The Studio
Showcase
- Located across the plaza from the entrance to Muppet*Vision
3D and opened in July 1991, the Studio Showcase contains a collection of movie
memorabilia that changes from time to time. (This attraction moved and became
the American Film Institute Showcase in 1996.)
- Resorts: Port Orleans
- Walt Disney World's
Port Orleans Resort, which opened in May, 1991, is designed to provide additional
mid-range accommodations in a setting reminiscent of New Orleans. The guestrooms
are styled after the famed French Quarter. Port Orleans is one of the EPCOT
resorts, and is located on Bonnet Creek Parkway.
- Studios: Jim Hensons's
Muppet*Vision 3D
- Jim Hensons's Muppet*Vision 3D opened on May
16, 1991 in a 1000 seat multi-media 3-D theater located in a further expansion
of the backlot annex area. The Muppets are up to their usual zany antics,
but with the added dimension of not just any 3-D, but Muppet*Vision 3D!
- Studios: Beauty
and the Beast - Beauty and the Beast stage show premiered.
- Resorts: Grand Floridian - Also opened
a convention center.
