- Resorts: Caribbean Beach - The Caribbean
Beach Resort opened on October 1, 1988 as the first moderately priced resort
on WDW property. It is also the first of the Epcot resorts to be opened.
- Resorts: Grand Floridian - The Grand
Floridian Beach Resort opened on June 28, 1988, as the third Magic Kingdom
monorail resort. Situated on the sandy beaches of the Seven Seas Lagoon between
the Polynesian Resort and the Magic Kingdom, this resort recalls the grandeur
of the Victorian Florida resort hotels at the last turn of the century. The
GF is the luxury resort of Disney World and boasts both the most expensive
rooms and restaurants.
- Magic Kingdom: Mickey's Birthdayland
- This new land opened June 18, 1988, in honor of Mickey's 60th birthday.
Here you will find the mouse's house, which you can walk through on your way
to meet him in person. It is situated between Fantasyland and Tomorrowland,
and extends over to the Walt Disney World Railroad, where you will find a
new train depot.
- EPCOT: World Showcase-Norway - The second
new World Showcase pavilion to be added to the original roster, Norway opened
May 6, 1988. In addition to the obligatory shops and eateries, the pavilion
boasts the best ride in World Showcase: The Maelstrom. This ride in a Viking
dragon-headed longboat takes you from ancient and mythical Norway to the North
Sea oil drilling platforms of today.
- EPCOT: World Showcase-Illuminations -
January 30, 1988 marked the opening of Illuminations, a spectacular light,
laser, water, fireworks, and music extravaganza which runs every night, rain
or shine, at park closing time. The action occurs in and around World Showcase
lagoon. In turn, various countries are highlighted, both musically and literally.
Then fountains, lasers, and fireworks are synchronized to music, leading to
a thunderous finale. The show may be viewed from anywhere along the World
Showcase Promenade, but the best viewing location is generally regarded to
be just beyond the Cantina at Mexico.
